FAQ 2: I've heard Rolfing® work is painful.  Does it hurt?

The short answer is no, it doesn't hurt.  You are always in complete control during your sessions.  If you want me to stop or change how I'm working, I do that immediately. Pain is counterproductive, so I monitor your body tension, facial expression, breathing, and voice.  I adjust depth, direction, speed, and pressure to stay within your tolerance . . .

When you're relaxed and comfortable, the work gets still done but we both enjoy it more.

In the earlier days of Rolfing® work, more attention was paid to getting things done than to client comfort.  Over the years, advanced practitioners have contributed less forceful methods that work better.  Though Rolfing® work started out painful, newer 'low force' approaches make it quite tolerable, and even pleasurable.  However, the fear of pain survives.

The old cliche, "No pain, no gain" is entirely false.  My training and philosophy include making the work easy for you to receive.   You'll feel deep contact as we work but there is no good reason to push you to endure unwanted pain.  Often, a profound change we're seeking can be induced sooner by the least effort imaginable.
